colonic preparation & aftercare

While there may not be any medical studies proving the benefits of colonics, my personal experience in the field for over 20 years has shown me that most people's lives improve dramatically from getting them done.  I have witnessed clients get significant relief with chronic issues like stubborn weight, IBS symptoms, skin rashes, low energy levels, mood swings, etc.

Colonics may alleviate symptoms when medically indicated for issues such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), food sensitivities, skin rashes, constipation, mood swings, bloating, and gas by relieving intestinal autointoxication.

Some individuals use colon hydrotherapy as a part of their weight loss regimen. In my experience, I have seen individuals who are committed to their health lose weight by doing a series of colonics spaced either 1 week or 2 weeks apart.

Please always work with your trusted medical professional along with getting colonics or any of my services.

Colon Hydrotherapy Prep Instructions

The following are suggestions on how to prepare for a colonic. It's OK if you don't follow them, however, if you do follow them you will have better results.

The most important thing to do is to follow the guidelines as best you can and be kind to yourself if you struggle with these guidelines.

  • Drink at least 1/2 your weight in ounces of pure clean water within those 2 days and hydrate with water the day of your session.  For pure water, you may want to purchase a Berkey water system, which isn't necessary for the colonic prep.

  • A 1-2 hour fast (no food or water or very light, if you must) before the session, is recommended for the best results.

  • It's best to be relaxed before and during your session. Take some deep breaths.  I often recommend doing this breathwork by Dr. Andrew Weil or Vagus Nerve Exercises by Sukie Baxter.

  • If more severe constipation is relevant, you may choose to take a natural supplement the evening before or the morning of your session. A cup of warm prune juice may also work well. I recommend avoiding harsh stimulants like laxatives with Cascara Sagrada. Please don't use anything but Prune Juice if you are prone to blood in your stools and make sure your doctor is ok with you having a colonic. I have other suggestions so please feel free to reach out if you need to @ n_gurney@yahoo.com

  • Cleansemore by RenewLife is a natural digestive supplement that may work well before the session. Cleansemore by Renew Life can be purchased online or at most natural health food stores like Whole Foods, Better Health, etc. Again don't use this product if you are prone to blood in your stools and make sure your doctor is okay with you having a colonic. Please read the label carefully and follow what is directed on the bottle.

Note:  The colonic session will remove the waste from the bowels, so don't worry if the above suggestions are not used.

After Your Colonic Session

These are general suggestions unless you’ve been instructed otherwise by your medical doctor. And of course, you know your body best, so always listen to what feels right for you.

  • Hydrate Well – Drink plenty of pure water (a good rule of thumb is half your body weight in ounces per day). Some clients enjoy using a Berkey water system for extra purity, but it’s not required for aftercare.

  • Sip Herbal Teas – Peppermint or ginger teas are especially soothing (unless you are anemic).

  • Replenish Electrolytes – Natural electrolyte drinks from a health food store can help restore balance.

  • Replenish with Probiotics – Supporting your gut with a high-quality probiotic after a cleanse can help restore healthy bacteria.

  • Return to a Clean Diet – It’s generally fine to go back to your normal eating plan after your colonic. However, for best results, try to avoid processed foods, gluten, dairy, wheat, soy, and corn during the first few days.

Since a typical session clears 7–10 bowel movements, it’s normal if it takes 2–3 days for your bowel movements to return to their regular rhythm.

Remember: one session is a great start, but it may only begin the cleansing process. If this is your first colonic, or if it’s been a while since your last, additional sessions may be recommended. Many clients choose weekly or every-other-week appointments for a deeper, more thorough cleanse. We’ll talk about what’s best for you at your next visit.

And if you’re unsure about which probiotic or electrolyte supplement would be best for you, I’d be happy to answer your questions and guide you toward good options.
